Dream Scheme, Jan - April 2009
Flora Court, Plymouth.

Jon Lilly, a talented local graffiti artist, and I were asked to work with a group of young people from the Stonehouse area of Plymouth.

Organised by Agnes Coiffi, the brief for this project was to work with the group to come up with ideas for a mural to brighten up the estate they live and play in.

Through a series of workshops with Jon and myself, the youngsters came up with ideas for the mural by thinking about what they like about living in plymouth. Jon then pulled all these ideas into one great design.

We worked for two weeks, washing, priming and painting the wall. The young people of the estate got involved with every stage of the painting process. Even when it was pouring with rain!

There was a great atmosphere when the wall was unveiled by the Lord Mayor.

Jon and myself were so proud of what the group have achieved. Hopefully they have found new skills and recognised a few of their own talents whilst working with us.

The Dreamscheme project is based on a simple concept of work = points = trips. Young people are enabled to carry out community based projects and tasks that improves their community, for which they earn points that can then be exchanged for trips and activities of their choice.

The young people are provided with situations in which they can do well, and prove that they can do wonderful things, which raises expectations of possibilities, leading to improved communication and relationships between residents young and old, bringing the community closer together.
