1st yr FD Spatial Design Students,
Plymouth College of Art
, Oct 2009.

A day spent with the students, introducing them to Installation Art. From a brief introduction to the work of several artists,
the group made models of imaginary art installations based on the artworks they were shown. Individuals gave a brief presentation of their models, explaining how they would work in context of scale, materials and sensory elements.

I left them with the task of designing possible configurations of the Co.Lab floor pads. Whilst designing potential layouts, the students were asked to consider things such as space, communication, movement and aesthetics. Their designs were implemented through the course of the exhibition.

The designs and Concepts were logged on a special sheet posted in the information area of the gallery.

Below are photos of the models made for the viewpoint space, with the student's own configurations of the Co.Lab floor pads:

Team 1 (Installed19th - 25th Nov):
"The arrangement of floor pads in a curve helps the participants to communicate with each other and observe the effects of their actions on the exhibition."

Team 2 (Installed 26th - 30th Nov):
"The Randomness of the scattered shreddings produced by the installation is mirrored in the random arrangement of the floor pads."

Team 3 (Installed 1st - 5th Dec):
"The arrangement of the floor pads in a straight line directly contrasts the random formation of the scattered shreddings."
